The Greek historian Herodotus (480-425 BC) tells us that "The decree against lying with women upon sanctified ground was first issued by the Egyptians."
"Almost all other peoples except the Egyptians and the Greeks tolerate intercourse with women upon sanctified ground thinking that there is no difference between man and the beasts: one sees they say all sorts of animals and birds copulate in the temples and the places sacred to the gods."
